Nasco Whirl-Pak® sterile bags are made of polyethylene plastic and vary in thickness. Whirl-Pak® bags are sterilized by ethylene oxide gas after manufacturing. Each sample bag features a wire tab closure that creates a leak proof bag once folded over tightly three times. While these polyethylene bags can be frozen at any temperature it is not advised to use them at temperatures above 180°F/82°C. Standard Bags
The Whirl-Pak® standard bags are available in sizes 2, 4, 7, 13 and 24 ounces. The 2 and 4 ounce sterile sampling bags are 2.25 milliliters thick while the 7 and 13 ounce bags are 3 milliliters thick and the 24 ounce bag is 4 milliliters thick. The thickness of the polyethylene bag increases with size to safeguard heavier samples. A felt tip marker can be used to label these clear bags. Standard sample bags can be used in legal proceedings; when it is important to see the sample clearly without removing it from the bag. Write-On Bags
SKS Science has Whirl-Pak® write-on bags in a variety of sizes. 1, 2 and 4 ounce bags are 2.25 milliliters thick while the 18 oz sterile bags are 2.5 milliliters thick and the 55 oz bags are 4 milliliters thick. SKS Science stocks a 100 ml Whirl-Pak® Thio-Bag ®. This single use bag is 2.25 milliliters thick and has a white smear proof writing area for labeling with pen, pencil or marker. Thio-Bags® are used when sampling chlorinated water and come with a nontoxic, nonnutritive tablet containing 10 mg of active sodium thiosulfate. The tablet is used to neutralize chlorine. Speci-Sponge ®
SKS Science offers Whirl-Pak® Speci-Sponge® bags in 18 ounces with a white writing area. The 2.5 milliliter thick Speci-Sponge® bag is used for environmental surface sampling where testing for foodborne pathogens or anthrax is required. Surface sampling is done with the sterilized sponge that is provided in the sampling bag. The sponge is free of bactericides and is tested to be non-inhibitory; therefore it is suggested to use sterile gloves while handling the sponge until it is returned in the bag. To test the samples gathered with the sponge simply add media to the sponge while in the bag and incubate for a negative or positive result or squeeze the sample from the sponge and use a pipette to transfer the sample. Filter Bag for Homogenizer Blender
SKS Science has a 55 ounce Whirl-Pak® Filter Bag for homogenizer blenders. This 55oz bag is 4 milliliters thick featuring a middle layer of perforated polyethylene. The .33 millimeter holes of the middle layer separate liquid from solid samples when a solid sample is placed on one side of the bag and then used in a homogenizer blender.
